ORONO — The University of Maine men’s hockey team scored three third-period goals to earn a 2-1 win over Northeastern in a Hockey East game Friday night.
Maine (10-17-6, 6-12-6 in Hockey East) trailed 1-0 after the second period. Northeastern (9-19-3, 5-16-3 in Hockey East) took the lead on a goal by Vinny Saponari 1 minute, 20 seconds into the second.
Kyle Beattie scored 6:30 into the third with an assist from Mark Nemec to tie the game for Maine. Ben Hutton scored the eventual game-winner with 10:28 left and Mark Anthoine scored an empty netter to make it 3-1. Jon Swavely, Adam Shemansky and Joey Diamond all had an assist.
Chris Rawlins had 33 saves for Northeastern, while Martin Ouellette made 19 saves for Maine.
Boston College 2, Maine 1, OT: Haley Skarupa scored 4:00 into overtime as the Eagles beat the Black Bears in the quarterfinals of the Hockey East tournament in Boston.
Maine took a 1-0 lead when Jennifer Moore scored 37 seconds into the second period. Boston College tied it on a goal by Melissa Bizzari 9:07 into the third. Boston College advances to play in the semifinals on March 9.
Track and field
ECAC Division III championships: Colby College senior Dom Kone finished third in the preliminary race in the 60-meter dash in New York.
Kone, a two-time national champion and the defending ECAC champ in the 60, finished in a time of 6.87. Last winter, he won the title in a time of 6.80. Thierry Diessongo of City College of New York was first in 6.83, while Oneonta State’s Sean Bernstein finished second in 6.85.
Also for Colby, John Gilboy finished eighth in the shot put with a throw of 47 feet. Ethan Druskat was 17th in the 60 at 7.10.
UNE 67, Bridgewater State 58: Beth Suggs scored 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Nor’easters won their opening round game in the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament in Amherst, Mass.
The Nor’easters improve to 25-4 and advance to the second round of the NCAA touranment for the first time in school history. They will face Amherst, which beat Farmingdale State 67-39, at 6 tonight.
Also Friday: Monmouth graduate Kevin Desmond was part of the 4x200-meter relay team that set the University of Southern Maine record with a time of 1:31.55 at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III championships in New York. Desmond was joined on the team by Sheldon Allen, Zach Miller and Matt Kimball, which finished 11th. ... Hall-Dale High School graduate Ryan Leach pitched 41⁄3 innings of relief, allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out six and walking two in the Franklin Pierce baseball team’s 10-8 loss to Wilmington in Flemington, N.J. Franklin Pierce also lost the second game of the doubleheader 5-4. ... Belgrade native Tereysa White stopped 23 shots in the St. Scholastica women’s hockey team’s 2-1 loss in the NCHA O’Brien Cup semifinals in River Falls, Wis.
