While many spring sports seasons are just beginning, the college lacrosse season is at the midway point. The Colby College women’s lacrosse team is about to pack a season’s worth of tough games into a few weeks of play.
The Mules (3-2) have nine games to play before the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament. Six of those game are against teams ranked in the top 20 in the latest NCAA Division III women’s lacrosse poll.
Colby’s tough stretch begins Wednesday, when the Mules play at No. 1 Salisbury (8-0). The Mules also have game against No. 8 Amherst, No. 18 Bowdoin, No. 15 Williams, No. 3 Middlebury, and No. 16 Bates remaining. The Mules are currently ranked No. 12 in the nation.
Most of Colby’s tough schedule is the result of its conference, arguably the toughest in the country. Nine of the top 20 teams in the most recent poll play in the NESCAC.

Thomas College and Colby College sit on opposite sides of Waterville, two and a half miles apart. Their baseball teams will renew their crosstown rivalry on Friday, 1,500 miles away.
The Terriers and the Mules will play a doubleheader in Winter Haven, Fla., as part of both teams’ spring trip.
Colby is off to a hot start in Florida. Tuesday’s 10-0 win over Kalamazoo improved the Mules record to 4-1. Colby plays a doubleheader against the University of Chicago on Thursday.
Thomas lost a pair of games to Rochester Institute of Technology on Tuesday to drop to 0-4. The Terriers play North Central and Kalamazoo on Wednesday.
Colby and Thomas have one game scheduled for later this season, at Colby’s Coombs Field on April 14.

On Monday, the Colby men’s tennis team earned its second win over a nationally-ranked team in as many weeks, when it defeated No. 23 Wisconsin-Whitewater, 5-4.
The previous Monday, Colby beat rival Bates, then ranked No. 25. On Tuesday, the Mules continued their spring trip to Hilton Head, S.C. with a 7-2 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan for their sixth win in a row.
