WRENHAM, Mass. — The University of Maine at Farmington softball team opened its season Wednesday by sweeping a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader from New England College, 8-0 and 6-4. The games were played at Gordon College — approximately a three-hour drive from Farmington — because UMF’s home field is covered in snow.

Cony graduate Emily Soule pitched two complete games for the Beavers, allowing a total of three runs in 13 innings while striking out 16. Soule pitched a three-hit shutout in the first game, which was called in the bottom of the sixth inning by the mercy rule. Cony grad Amy Jones and Katie Clark each homered and drove in two runs for UMF. Mt. Abram grad Jillian Withee was 2 for 2 with a pair of doubles and Hannah Lust ended the game with a two-run double in the sixth.

In game two, freshman Kennadi Grover went 4 for 4, belted two home runs, and drove in five runs. Jones singled twice, each time just before Grover homered. Freshman Alexandra Swanson had three hits for the Pilgrims (4-6 overall, 0-2 NAC). The Pigrims scored a run and loaded the bases with two out in the top of the seventh, but Soule got a called strike three on the final batter to end the game.
