WACO, Texas —Waterville Senior High School graduate Bethanie Brown finished fifth at the Big 12 Cross Country Championship meet on Saturday.

Brown, a freshman at Iowa State, finished the 6-kilometer race in a time of 20 minutes, 36.2 seconds, less than a minute behind race winner Marielle Hall of Texas (19:38.3). She was three seconds behind teammate Katy Moen, who finished fourth in a time of 20:33.0.

Brown was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, which helped the Cyclones win the team title with 17 points. Also for Iowa State, Crystal Nelson finished second in 19:49.3 and Perez Rotich was ninth in 20:52.1. West Virginia was second with 46 points.

America East Championships: In Binghamton, N.Y., Mt. Blue High School graduate Kelton Cullenberg finished second at the America East Cross Country Championships, finishing two seconds behind winner John Prizzi of New Hampshire.

Cullenberg, a senior at the University of Maine, finished the 8K race in 24 minutes, 57.60 seconds. Prizzi won the race in 24:55.22.

Also for Maine, Alexander Moser finished fourth in 25:11.92.

The Black Bears finished fourth, with 56 points. The University of Maryland-Baltimore County won the meet with 28 points, followed by Binghamton, Stony Brook and the University of New Hampshire.

The Maine women, meanwhile, finished eighth thanks to a 24th-place finish by Rachel Wilkinson, who finished the 5k course in 19:02.98.

NESAC Championships: In Waterford, Conn., the Colby men finished fifth and the women sixth. Lawrence High graduate Erzsebet Nagy finished second overall to lead Middlebury College to the women’s title. David Chelimo finished 10th and Silas Eastman 12th to lead the Colby men while Alanna McDonough placed 18th and Katherine Connoly 24th to pace the women. Erskine grad Sam Seekins finished 15th to help the Bowdoin men to a fourth place finish.

Women’s soccer

UM-Farmington 7, Johnson St. 2: Nine different players were involved in scoring as the No. 3 Beavers downed sixth-seeded Badgers in a North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal matchup in Farmington. Renee Dupres scored two goal for UMaine-Farmington while Bridget Humphrey, Kayla Tuttle, Ava Amador, Alexandra Crocker and Shelby Bryant scored one apiece. Sara Quimby had two assists for UMF and Colleen Tourigny had one.

UMF (9-6-3) plays No. 2 Castleton State in a semifinal game Tuesday while Johnson State finishes at 7-10-0.

Colby-Sawyer 5, Thomas 0: Five players scored scored for the Chargers in the NAC quarterfinal game in New London, N.H.

Kate Thibodeau made nine saves for Thomas which finishes at 4-13-0. Colby-Sawyer is 17-3-0.

Field hockey

UM-Farmington 2, Simmons 0: The Beavers scored two early goals then hung on for the NAC quarterfinal win in Farmington. Sophomore Meghan Hughes scored off an assist from Chelsea Morley six minutes into the game then Morley assisted on Kaitlyn Bullen’s score later in the half.

Simmons held a 12-76 edge in shot including a 9-0 advantage in the second half. Brianna Rastello made four saves for Simmons (12-8-0) while Curran Brierley made seven for UMF (8-6-0). Farmington advances to Wednesday’s tournament semifinal against top-seeded Castleton State.

Maine 9, Vermont 1: Senior Annabelle Hamilton scored three goals to lead the Black Bears to the America East Conference win in Orono. Maine (11-8-0) clinched the No. 3 seed for next week’s America East tournament with the win.

Nokomis graduate Marisssa Shaw scored a goal while Holly Stewart added a pair in the second half.

Middlebury 3, Colby 0: Three different players scored to lead the Panthers to the New England Small College Athletic Conference quarterfinal win in Middlebury, Vt.

Emily Knapp made five saves in goal for No. 4 Middlebury (13-2-0) while Sarah Evans and Michelle Burt combined for seven for No. 5 Colby (9-6-0).

Also Saturday: Lawrence High graduate Jess Poulin made nine saves to lead Husson to a 1-0 win over New England College in a NAC soccer quarterfinal game . . . Messalonskee grad Jessica Boghosian scxored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the University of Southern Maine field hockey team to a 5-4 win against Fitchburg State . . . Cony graduate and Assumption College swimmer Victoria Weber won the 100-yard freestyle at the Wesleyan Invitational.
