BRUNSWICK — Behind a standout performance from junior pitcher Scott Goldberg the Colby baseball team earned an 8-2 victory over rival Bowdoin College on Friday.

Goldberg — who is third in the New England Small College Athletic Conference in earned run average (1.40), total wins (3-0) and strikeouts (30) — allowed just one earned run, one walk and five hits in eight innings pitched while striking out eight.

Soren Hanson had three hits, two runs scored and an RBI in the win, while Ryan Arsenault and Nate Ellis had two hits each. Tyler Starks drove in a pair of runs for the Mules, while Kevin Galvin finished with two runs scored. After taking a 1-0 lead in the second, Colby — who scored seven unearned runs in the contest off four Bowdoin errors — broke things open in the bottom of the third by posting five runs on the scoreboard.

The Mules (11-5, 3-1 NESCAC) and Polar Bears (12-7-1, 3-4 NESCAC) will face each other again today in a doubleheader beginning at noon.

Softball

UMBC 3, Maine 0: Jessica Holt pitched a complete game, allowing four hits while striking out three, as the Retrievers prevailed in the Black Bears’ home opener.

Danielle O’Neill and Kelly Lane had RBI singles for UMBC (23-15, 1-5).

Jessica Burk, EmJ Fogel, Jean Stevens and Rachel Harvey each had hits for Maine (13-12, 5-4).

The teams will play a doubleheader today.

Bowdoin 2, Colby 0: Chalk up round one to the Polar Bears.

Bowdoin College’s Melissa DellaTorre allowed just one hit while striking out five and walking two in seven shutout innings as the Polar Bears prevailed in Brunswick. Megan Michie had a strong performance in the circle for Colby in the loss, striking out four and walking one in seven innings pitched. Grace Farnkoff broke up the no-hitter with a single in the top of the fourth.

The Mules (4-10, 1-2 New Englands Small College Athletic Conference) and Polar Bears (14-6, 3-1) will go back at it this afternoon, beginning at 12 p.m., as they will play a doubleheader at Pickard Field.

In the opener the two sides remained scoreless through the first four innings until Bowdoin finally broke through in the top of the fifth. Pinch runner Siena Mitman scored from second on a single from Adriane Krul, and in the top of the seventh Casey Correa launched a solo homerun to round out the scoring.
