Fresh off being recognized as a James J Fitzpatrick Trophy semifinalist, the 6-foot-4 Lucas was named the Gatorade Maine Football Player of the Year.
“It’s an honor,” Lucas said. “It’s a pretty special feeling, especially when you look at some of the guys who have won this award.”
Lucas turned in a record-setting season that culminated with the Rams winning the Class B state title with a 30-23 victory over Kennebunk last month.
He threw three touchdowns and 347 yards — 307 in the second half — in the come-from-behind victory over Kennebunk.
“We are extremely proud of Ben and all his accomplishments,” Cony coach Robby Vachon said. “This goes a long way toward validating all the hard work he put in.”
Lucas, who is the first Cony player to win the state’s Gatorade player of the year award, threw for 3,357 yards and a state record 41 touchdown passes this season. He finished his career with a state record 89 touchdown passes and 7.575 yards, which is second only to former Winthrop quarterback Lee St. Hilaire.
