PITTSFIELD — On Friday night, the Winslow High School boys basketball team won its 10th consecutive game, taking a 64-41 win at Maine Central Institute. The game was a display of everything that the Black Raiders have done well this season. They attacked the Huskies with a balanced offense and were relentless on defense, forcing 30 MCI turnovers.

Four Winslow (12-2) players scored in double figures, led by guards Nason Lanphier, who scored 18 points, and Trevor Lovely, who scored 17. Forwards Justin Martin and Austin Ireland added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

“That’s the way it’s been going the last few games. When we are playing well, we’re going to have four of our five starters in double figures,” Winslow coach Jared Browne said. “Everybody’s happy, everybody gets touches and everybody’s playing well right now. We’re on a nice little run.”

The Black Raiders never trailed. MCI (5-9) stayed close throughout most of the first half and Winslow led 27-19 at the break. The Black Raiders opened the third quarter with a 12-5 run and pulled away in the fourth quarter.

“They’re quick. We didn’t handle their pressure very well. I looked for some leadership out there from my guys and we didn’t get any,” MCI coach Mike Susi said.

Winslow had 24 steals, led by Lanphier’s five. Lovely and Connor Wildes each had four steals and the quick hands and pressure led to numerous transition layups.

“We let (the guards) gamble for steals a little more than some other guys because we have Justin Martin back there to block shots and Austin to get the rebounds. So we’re letting those guys do a little bit more defensively and it’s paying off. We’re getting a lot of baskets in transition and that gets us fired up and going,” Browne said.

For most of the game, Winslow played tight defense on Kael McCarthy, MCI’s top shooter. McCarthy finished with 10 points.

“McCarthy was key. We did OK on him. He hit a couple shots in the second half, but he’s a good shooter. He’s going to hit those,” Browne said.

Jerry Chen led MCI with 11 points and Doug Bryant added 10. Martin had 11 rebounds and three blocks for Winslow, while Ireland grabbed eight boards.
