FARMINGTON — To replace one of the winningest coach in Maine high school football history, Mt. Blue High School found another one of the winningest coaches in Maine high school football history.
Jim Aylward, the only head football coach Rumford’s Mountain Valley High School has ever had, was approved as the new head football coach at Mt. Blue in a school board meeting on Tuesday night. Aylward replaces longtime coach Gary Parlin, who retired after the 2013 season.
Aylward was the head coach at Mountain Valley 1989, when the school was formed with the merger of Rumford and Mexico high schools. In the last two and a half decades, Aylward built one of the most successful football programs in the state. The Falcons won seven regional and four state championships. The last decade was Aylward’s most successful with the Falcons, winning Class B gold balls in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010.
Parlin retired after 21 season’s as the Cougars head coach. Parlin won more than 100 games and led Mt. Blue to an undefeated season and Class B state title in 2012. Parlin’s Cougars won the Pine Tree Conference Class A championship in 2005.
