Mt. Blue and Maranacook have their sights set on Alpine high school skiing state championships, which will be contested this week in three classes at three different mountains.

State Nordic titles were decided last week and will be combined with this week’s Alpine championships to determine overall winners in each class.

Mt. Blue coach Mark Cyr likes his boys team’s chances at a Class A Alpine title, which begins with giant slalom competition today at Shawnee Peak in Bridgton. And the Maranacook boys will be one of the favorites in the Class B meet that begins Friday at Mt. Abram.

“I’ve got a strong team,” Cyr said. “If they all stand up and just ski a solid race, I think they could definitely come away with an Alpine championship.”

The boys are led by sophomores Kyle Farrington and Dylan Roberts along with juniors Anthony Franchetti and Felix Bonnevie. Mt. Blue freshman Miles Pelletier currently holds a 30-point lead in the race for Class A skimeister.

The girls team only has three skiers but it includes two good ones in Katerina Bessey and Mallory Parker, who finished 1-2 in the recent Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference slalom race.

Skowhegan skiers are led my Mike Miller, who finished fifth in the KVAC slalom, and Gavin Beard on the boys side and Abbie Richardson among the girls.

The Maranacook boys, unbeaten and coming off their fourth KVAC title in a row, would like to avenge last year’s disappointing second-place finish to Yarmouth. The Black Bears feature five seniors — Alec Daigle, Matt Delmar, Alex Tooth, Kelby Mace and Toby Smith — who have been on the team for four years.

“These seniors are very focused and have some unfinished business to attend to from last year,” Maranacook coach Ronn Gifford said.

Daigle, who won the KVAC slalom title, will get some of his strongest competition from Delmar and Mace.

Erin Guilmet and Rachel Tooth are the competitors for the girls team.

Mt. Abram senior Elise Luce is the favorite to repeat her slalom and giant slalom Class B state titles from a year ago while teammate Emily Listowich has a shot at a top 10 finish. Jed Stevens, who finished second in the Mountain Valley Conference slalom race, leads the Mt. Abram boys.

Winthrop senior JJ Jansen won the MVC slalom and will be a contender for a title in Class C while Amy Dehaas and Annie Guerette lead the Rambler girls.

Monmouth senior Becki Bryant currently holds a four-point lead in the race for Class C skimeister.
