Rogers could get call from Brewers

Mt. Ararat graduate could get shot in majors

By PAUL BETIT Portland Press Herald

Mt. Ararat High School graduate Mark Rogers could be close to pitching
in his first major league baseball game.

The Milwaukee Brewers, who made the right-handed pitcher from Orrs
Island their first-round pick in the 2004 baseball draft, may be on
verge of adding him to their major league roster.

“He flew to Milwaukee Tuesday and worked out,” said Jack Toffey, a
Boston-based sports agent who represents Rogers. “It’s my understanding
he will be activated at some point.”

According to a report filed Wednesday morning on the Milwaukee Journal
Sentinel’s web site, Rogers was in Milwaukee undergoing motion analysis
tests.

Pitching this season at Class A Huntsville, Rogers, 24, went 6-8 with a
3.71 earned run average in 24 starts. In 111 2/3 innings, he had 111
strikeouts and limited opponents to a .210 batting average.

“I don’t think we’ll be seeing him here again,” said Huntsville general
manager Buck Rogers. “He belongs in Triple A.”

It was Rogers’ second full season back on the mound after missing the
previous two seasons recovering from shoulder surgery.

Last March during spring training, Rogers told the Press Herald he was
finally able to focus entirely on his pitching and not on the health of
his right shoulder for the first time since 2006.

Rogers’ medical problems began during the 2006 season when he injured
his right shoulder while at Single A Brevard County.

On Jan. 12, 2007, Rogers had surgery to repair a torn labrum and tighten
a loose ligament in his right shoulder. About 18 months later, after
sitting out the 2007 season, he had surgery to remove scar tissue, which
forced him to miss the 2008 season.

While spending the 2009 season at Brevard County, Rogers compiled a 1.67
ERA in 22 starts while limited to a strict pitch count.
This season, Rogers spent a portion of August on the disabled list after
developing a blister on his pitching hand.
