PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- The University of Maine baseball team collected 16 hits in defeating Chicago State 13-7 on Sunday for its second straight win.
Brian Doran led the Black Bears with two singles, a double and two runs scored while Fran Whitten singled, doubled and drove in three runs. Starting pitcher Shaun Coughlin (1-1) went six innings, allowing two hits and a run while walking two and striking out nine.
Maine (8-10) returns to action Tuesday against Florida Atlantic.
Women's lacrosse
Thomas 20, Wheelock 6: Gardiner gradaute Jenn Day scored four goals and added three assists to lead the Terriers in their home opener in Waterville. Ceara DiBiase added three goals for the winners while Khamaree Owens, Morgan Hutchins, Nora Rauch and Katie Mailman all scored their first collegiate goals.
Brittany Fox made five saves in goal for Thomas (3-1) while Monica Bettle made 20 for Wheelock (0-2).
Softball
Fordham 4, Maine 0: Michelle Daubman allowed three hits and struck out four over five innings to lead the Rams to the win in Clearwater, Fla. Alexis Bogdanovich took the loss in the circle for Maine as she went six innings while giving up four runs, one earned, on six hits with a pair of strikeouts and no walks. Fordham is 11-9, Maine is 1-18.
