GOLDEN GLOVES BOXING: Berry up for fight

Tonight, Brandon Berry will fight in the Northern New England Golden Gloves championships for the final time. His trainer, Ken "Skeet" Wyman, said the time is right for Berry to earn his first title.

"He's never looked so good," Wyman said. "He's ready for this fight. He's anxious. This is his year."

Just who Berry, a West Forks native, will fight at the Burlington (Vt.) Auditorium is unclear. Wyman said he hasn't heard from the promoters the name of Berry's opponent in the 141-pound division. Because of the flu outbreak that's hit the region, there's a chance Berry may not have an opponent, Wyman said.

"I'm excited. I'm really hoping that I get to fight (Saturday) night," Berry said. "I mean, I have done my part, I signed up months ago. I've been training hard. I'm physically and mentally prepared."

Berry prepped for tonight's fight with a three round unanimous decision over Julio Perez at TD Garden in Boston last Saturday. After a close first round, Berry took control of the fight in the second and third rounds, Wyman said.

"Perez might have won the first round. You just see Brandon taking control of the fight in the second round," Wyman said. "He was doing everything behind the jab. He had the best jab he's shown us, and he was focused."

If Berry wins tonight's bout, he'll compete in the New England championship, held Feb. 12-13 in Lowell, Mass.

"I've always wanted to have a chance to fight in Lowell so I will take full advantage of that opportunity," Berry said. "Coming home with a New England Golden Gloves title would be unreal so that will be my focus if I don't get a fight (Saturday) night."

Berry plans to make his professional boxing debut on May 11 at Valley High School in Bingham.
