CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The University of Maine earned its biggest win of the season, beating No. 3 Boston College 4-1 at Conte Forum Friday night.
Maine (6-14-4, 2-9-4 in Hockey East play) took a 1-0 lead just 3 minutes, 11 seconds into the game on a goal by Joey Diamond. Ryan Lomberg put in a rebound off a shot by Bill Normam later in the first to put the Black Bears up 2-0 and Will Merchant extended the lead to 3-0 early in the second period.
Boston College (14-5-2, 11-5-1 in Hockey East play) scored a power-play goal at 13:06 of the third period by Steven Whitney.
Kyle Beattie scored an empty-net goal to seal the win for Maine. Martin Ouellette stopped 34 shots for the Black Bears.
Men's basketball
Thomas 92, Castleton 91: Stanley Greene Jr. made a layup with 31 seconds left and Marquis Pollard blocked a shot with seven seconds left as the Terriers won in Waterville.
Greene Jr. finished with 15 points and four assists for Thomas, which improves to 7-8, 4-7 in the North Atlantic Conference. Franklin Salvador had 18 points, while Pollard finished with 17 points and nine rebounds for the Terriers. Skowhegan graduate Levi Barnes and Jarrad DeVaughn each had 14 points for Thomas.
Mark Comstock had 23 points and Logan White 20 for Castleton (9-9, 7-4 in the conference). Chris Barletta added 19 points and Chad Copeland 16.
UM-Farmington 67, Green Mountain 43: Maranacook Community School graduate Ben Johnson scored 25 points and grabbed 18 rebounds as the Beavers won in Farmington.
Garrett Clemmer added 10 points for UMF (14-3, 9-2 in the NAC).
Carnelius Green had 10 points and eight rebounds for Green Mountain (3-14, 2-9 NAC).
Women's basketball
Castleton 75, Thomas 39: Tarryn Bolognani had 16 points and eight rebounds as the Spartans beat the Terriers in Waterville.
Megan Pelletier scored 13 points and Ashleigh Gagne had seven points and five rebounds for Thomas (4-12, 3-8 in the NAC).
Women's hockey
Trinity 2, Colby 1: Emily Kleidon deflected in a shot by Rebecca Rosen with 1:40 left as the Bantams beat the Mules in Waterville.
Alexa Pujol had 40 saves for Trinity (8-4-4, 3-3-3 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference), while Brianne Wheeler had 27 saves for Colby (6-11-0, 2-9-0 in the conference).
Trinity took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Lauren Fitzgerald in the second period. Annie Papadellis scored a few minutes later to tie it.
College skiing
Colby Carnival: Jim Ryan finished tied for ninth for the Colby men's Alpine team and Paige Whistler led the women by finishing 18th in the giant slalom, at Sugarloaf.
Ryan had identical runs of 51.38 for a two-run time of 1:42.76. Marc Massie finished 20th in 1:43.62. The Mules four other skiers did not finish both runs. Colby finished tied for seventh.
The Colby women had five skiers in the top 30 to finish eight. Whistler finished in 1:49.97. Jeanne Barthold finished 21st at 1:50.57 and Cassady Roberts was 23rd in 1:51.27.
Also Friday: Lawrence High School graduate Brooks Spaulding had 18 points as the Husson men's basketball team beat Maine Maritime Academy 68-53 in Bangor.
