Skowhegan Area High School is looking for a new varsity boys basketball coach.

Troy Scott, who coached the Indians the last seven seasons, stepped down last week, just a few weeks after leading Skowhegan to its first trip to the Eastern Class A quarterfinals since 2002.

Scott lost his job at Goodwill Hinckley when it closed last year. Scott teaches at the junior high level at Cony High School in Augusta and living in China, Scott realized the added commute to Skowhegan was too much for him and his family.

"I was going from China to Augusta to Skowhegan. It wasn't fair to the kids or my family," Scott said.

Scott won 46 games in seven seasons, and reached the playoffs three times. Scott's best season was 2007-08, when the Indians won 11 games. This season, the Indians went 9-9 before falling to Brewer, 63-53, in the regional quarterfinals.

Scott's resignation was a surprise, Skowhegan athletic director Terry Michaud said.

"I thought he was doing a fine job," Michaud said. "You couldn't ask for a guy with more passion for the game and the kids."

The last two seasons, Skowhegan was hit hard by injuries. In 2008-09, the Indians lost talented shooter Paul Verville to a neck injury. With Verville back this past season, forward Jordan Taylor missed the first half of the season with a knee injury.

"We had some bad luck, injury-wise," Scott said.

Scott said Skowhegan's next coach inherits a team with some talent.

"Next year they'll still be good. We didn't graduate a lot of starters," Scott said.

A graduate of Lawrence High School, Scott holds the Lawrence record for career points by a boy with 1,302. Although he won't be coaching next season, Scott can't imagine not being around basketball somehow.

"I still want to be involved with basketball," Scott said. "It's still something I love. I'll miss the players."

A search for a new coach will begin soon, Michaud said.
