COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Colby men's hockey rallies for tie

WATERVILLE -- The Colby College men's hockey team scored three goals in the span of 3 minutes, 15 seconds of the third period to tie 11th-ranked Amherst College 3-3 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game Saturday at Alfond Rink.

Amherst (12-5-3, 8-4-2 in the conference), which beat second-ranked Bowdoin College on Friday, seemed to be in control until the third period.

The Mules (4-13-3, 2-10-2 in the conference) started their comeback at 6:22 of the third when Ben Chwick scored his seventh goal of the season. Five seconds later, Spike Smigelski scored his third goal of the season, with an assist from Ray Zeek. Smigelski tied it at 9:37 with an assists from Zeek and Chris Kennedy.

Conor Brown scored in the first period to give Amherst a 1-0 lead. He also scored in the second, as did Brian Safstrom as Amherst went up 3-0.

Women's basketball

UM-Farmington 59, New England College 56: Mt. Abram graduate Kenni Norton had 17 points and 12 rebounds as the Beavers held on to win in Henniker, N.H.

Lindsay Ranquist added 16 points for UMF (7-13, 7-7 in the North Atlantic Conference). Winslow High School graduate Elizabeth Ferry had five points.

Kate Levy had 28 points to lead NEC (15-6, 10-4 in the conference).

UMBC 86, Maine 79: Brittany Crowell scored 22 points and Raven Harris chipped in with 20 to lead the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in an America East game in Orono.

Harris also had nine assists for the Retrievers (7-15 overall, 3-6 in America East).

Courtney Anderson scored 10 points and had six assists to lead the Black Bears (2-20, 1-8).

Middlebury 52, Colby 48: Scarlett Kirk scored 20 points and the Panthers made 3 of 4 foul shots in the final 16 seconds to pull away for a NESCAC win in Waterville.

Hall-Dale High School graduate Carylanne Wolfington scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Colby (7-14, 1-7 in the conference). Brooke Chandor added 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Diana Manduca had 10 points and four assists.

Laura Lowry added six points and five steals, while Katie Pett had four points and 13 rebounds for Middlebury (11-10, 3-5 in the conference).

Colby-Sawyer 81, Thomas 53: Cailin Bullett had a game-high 31 points as the Chargers beat the Terriers in New London, N.H.

Kelsey Cahill added 15 points for Colby-Sawyer (17-4, 14-0).

Messalonskee graduate Megan Pelletier had 14 points and Katie McAllister had 10 points for Thomas (5-14, 4-10 in the conference).

Men's basketball

Thomas 72, Colby-Sawyer 71: Marquis Pollard scored at the buzzer as the Terriers picked up the win after losing a 16-point first half lead, in New London, N.H.

Jarrad DeVaughn scored a game-high 27 points for Thomas (10-9, 7-7 in the NAC). Skowhegan Area High School graduate Levi Barnes added 19 points, including 14 in the first half, while Eric Westbrooks had 11 points. Pollard finished with four points and five blocks.

Mike Dias had 18 points, Wol Majong 16 and Zach Bean 10 for Colby-Sawyer (9-11, 9-4 in the conference).

Middlebury 85, Colby 62: The Panthers shot 53.4 percent from the floor and forced 21 turnovers in a win over the Mules in Waterville.

Peter Lynch scored 18 points for Middlebury (19-1, 8-0 in the conference). James Jensen added 13.

Chris Hudnut scored 14 points, while Shane Rogers added 11 and Sam Wilson 10 for Colby (6-15, 2-6 in the conference).

UM-Farmington 85, New England College 76: Maranacook Community School graduate Ben Johnson had 18 points and 11 rebounds as the Beavers won in Henniker, N.H.

Garrett Clemmer led UMF (16-5, 11-3 in the North Atlantic Conference) with 20 points. Andrew Dickey added 17, Nate Carson had 12 and Yusuf Iman 11.
