PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Five area wrestlers won opening-round matches and advanced to today's quarterfinals at the New England High School Wrestling Championships.
Gardiner's Peter Del Gallo (106) beat Massachusetts' Daniel Coughlin (North Andover) and New Hampshire's No. 1 seed Tyler Fitzpatrick (Timberlane) 5-2. His brother Daniel Del Gallo (138) scored a 13-1 major decision against Zach Tepper of Danbury, Conn.
Skowhegan's Tyler Craig (113) won 5-2 against New Hampshire's Tim McLinden, also from Timberlane. Teammate Andrew Pineo (195) won 8-5 against New Hampshire's Walters Ndi (Concord).
Monmouth Academy's Stewart Buzzell (145) won 5-3 against New Hampshire's Azel Sarvalov (Manchester Central).
Winners in today's quarterfinal matches are guaranteed a top-six finish and all-New England status.
Skowhegan’s Mikal Federici (170) and Aaron Lint (285) dropped opening round matches, but each won their first consolation match to stay alive in the tournament. Federici pinned Connecticut's Dante Futria (Middletown) and Lint beat fellow Maine wrestler Marc Suprenant (Wells) 8-4.
