Goodall, Terriers win in 9th inning

Thomas wins 1st baseball game against USM since 1984

GORHAM -- Ben Goodall's RBI single broke a tie in the top of the ninth inning and Thomas College defeated the University of Southern Maine 7-5 in non-conference baseball action Thursday afternoon.

It was the first time Thomas defeated the Huskies since April 29, 1984. USM had defeated the Terriers 13 consecutive times.

While Thomas (11-19) played errorless defense, USM (14-13) committed five errors, leading to four unearned runs. In the ninth, the Huskies botched a sacrifice bunt to load the bases with nobody out. Tom Cameron added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly on what should have been the third out.

Goodall, Tom Desjardins, Josh Nickerson and John Charves each had two hits for Thomas. Erskine Academy graduate Nick Grady added a pair of hits and scored two runs for USM.

Messalonskee grad Chris Farrar started and pitched two scoreless innings for Thomas. Danny Burke and Cory Estes each pitched a hitless inning of relief as Burke got the win and Estes picked up the save.

Maine Central Institute grad Andrew deBethune tossed three shutout innings for the Huskies.

UMaine-Farmington 0-6, Lyndon St. 2-5: Freshman Brett Wallingford blasted a walk-off home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh as the Beavers won game two to take a split of the North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader in Farmington.

UMF (4-19, 3-13 NEAC East) trailed 5-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, but got within a run on an RBI double by Josh Garneau. One out later, Wallingford's two-run shot ended the game.

Garneau had three hits in the game, while Wallingford and Zach Keene each had two hits.

In Game 1, UMF's Bill Ridge tossed a complete-game five-hitter, but took the tough loss. Shane O'Donnell-Leach finished with a six-hit shutout for Lyndon St. (9-21, 3-9).

Men's lacrosse

Daniel Webster 9, Thomas 8: Daniel Webster rallied from a two-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to edge Thomas in Waterville.

Gardiner native Kolby Peckham scored two goals for the Terriers while former Mt. Blue standout Kevin Averill added a goal as well.

High school baseball

Carrabec 6, Boothbay 5: Brandon James drove home Aaron Lane in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Cobras past the Seahawks in a Mountain Valley Conference game in North Anson.

Lane led off the inning with a triple and later came home on James' single. Morgan Taylor and Tucker Atwood each had two hits for the Cobras (1-0).

Boothbay, which forced extra innings with a run in the top of the seventh, is 0-1.

High school softball

Carrabec 8, Boothbay 3: Courtney Turner struck out 16 and allowed just two hits to lead the Cobras in an MVC game.

Turner also provided a two-run triple in the fourth inning to break open a 1-0 game. Ashlee Knight had three singles and Angelisa Bean had two hits for Carrabec (1-0).

Sarah Caron and Tori Ripley had the hits for Boothbay (0-1).

Girls lacrosse

Cony 20, Edward Little 3: Naomi Miller scored six goals and Cassie Diplock added five goals and an assist to lead the Rams.

Mia Diplock scored three goals to lead Cony, which led 13-2 at the halftime. Shelbea Russell scored two goals to lead the Red Eddies (0-1).

Edward Little scored in the opening minute of the game, but it was all Cony (1-0) from there.

Kayla Vachon and Brooke Logan each scored a pair of goals as well for the Rams. Katrina Duncan made six saves to earn the victory.
