Madison Area Memorial High School girls track and field coach Bob Hagopian acknowledged he didn't know what to expect out of his team this spring.
WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
• Winslow’s Alliyah Veilleux won the shot put (31-0.5) and 400 meters (1:03.38) at the Community Cup.
• Waterville’s Georgia Bolduc won the 100-meter (12.90), 200 (26.81) and pole vault (7-6) at the Community Cup.
• Waterville’s Olivia Thurston won the long jump (15-4) and 100 hurdles (16.31) at the Cup as well.
• Waterville’s Isaiah Spofford won the triple jump (42-1.5), 100 (11.63) and 200 (23.17) at the Cup.
• Waterville’s Jeff Hale won the 800 (2:03.37) and 3,200 (10:08.88).
• Waterville’s Nick Margitza won the discus (127-09) and shot put (43-7).
• MCI’s Meghan Hughes won the shot put (32-1) and discus (95-6) at a seven-team meet at Belfast.
• MCI’s Craig Reazor won the pole vault (10-6), javelin (138-10) and long jump (18-8.75).
• Mt. View’s Curtis Griffin won the 110 hurdles (16.07) and 300 hurdles (43.58) at the annual Cony Under the Lights meet.
• Maranacook’s Taylor Watson won the 110 hurdles (16.19) and 300 hurdles (42.88) at the annual Cony Under the Lights meet.
• Cony’s Luke Dang won the 200 (24.00) and 400 (52.87) at the meet.
• Maranacook’s Harry Lanphear won the shot put (42.0.5) and javelin 137-6 at the meet.
• Maranacook’s Abby Mace won the 1,600 (5:27.43) and 3,200 (11:42.28).
"I figured they could maybe go fifth or sixth in the conference," he said. "But they've come a long way. I think they can go a lot higher. They have been the biggest surprise."
Hagopian said his team can contend for the Mountain Valley Conference title because every athlete has qualified for the championship meet.
"We had 14 girls come out for track, and every one of them qualified for the meet in at least one event," Hagopian said. "I'm really, really impressed. This hasn't happened before."
Sophomore Allie McClintock and freshman Briana Oliver lead the way for the Bulldogs. Each has qualified for the MVC meet in four events.
McClintock competes in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and pole vault. Oliver competes in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, 100 and high jump.
"The girls have come along really well," said Hagopian, who is in his 18th season. "We hope to perform really well at the MVC meet. This is the first time I've had a team look this good."
The MVC meet is at 1 p.m. Friday at Alumni Field in Augusta.

The Waterville boys received a boost when Max Brown returned after being sidelined for much of the season with mononucleosis. Brown finished second in the long jump (18-4.5) and triple jump (39 feet, 10 inches) Monday at the annual Community Cup Championship.
Brown also ran the second leg in the victorious 4x400 relay team.
"He's been limited all year," Waterville coach Ian Wilson said. "He could be a huge boost. We were very pleased to see him come out and do what he is capable of doing. Usually, when a kid comes down with mono, in my mind we put a line through his name and just hope for the best. But he's become a factor."

Messalonskee junior Harlow Ladd had a tough day at the Community Cup on Monday, coming up short to Waterville's Jeff Hale in the 800 and 3,200.
"It was pretty tough," said Ladd, who did win the 1,600. "But If I had to lose to anybody I'm glad it was to Jeff Hale."
Added Messalonskee coach Scott Wilson: "Harlow doesn't like to lose. He says he is ready to do what he needs to do."
Next up for Ladd is the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A meet Saturday in Bath.
"I don't plan on losing," he said. "I just want to go out there and prove to myself that I am still fast."
Ladd is going to run the 800, 1,600, 3,200 and 4x400 relay at the KVAC meet.
"It's going to be a big day," he added.

The Winslow girls 4x800 relay team didn't let tough weather stand in its way of breaking a school record Monday at the Community Cup.
The team -- Erica Bertolaccini, Lauren Schassberger, Molly Schassberger and Emily Farrell -- won the event in 10:21.99 to break a nine-year school record.
"The previous record was 10:27, so they got it easily," Winslow coach Shawn Carey said. "They were shooting for it. It was a good performance."

Erskine coach Chris Bennett hoped his Eagles would have enough depth to make yet another run at defending Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B champ Waterville this season.
Last spring the Erskine boys gave Waterville all it could handle, losing the KVAC B title by 3.5 points.
However, Bennett said Tuesday only 38 of their 82 athletes -- about 46 percent -- qualified for the KVAC B meet, which is Saturday at McMann Field in Bath.
"We didn't get as many people qualified as we would've liked," Bennett said. "We like to be around 50 percent, if not a little higher. We were hoping to give Waterville a run for its money, but it looks like a longshot now. But we'll go there and give it our best shot."
Jarrod Lenfest and Ethan Bronson have enjoyed strong seasons for the Erskine boys. The two should be seeded high in the distance events at the KVAC B meet.
On the girls team, Brittany Sherman and Kelly McCormac are contenders in the 400.
"I have a bunch of kids who have qualified in six or seven events, so we are seeing where there best fit is," Bennett said. "We want to give them their best chance to move up."
