PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Western Michigan scored seven runs in the first inning on its way to a 7-3 victory in a college baseball game against the University of Maine on Wednesday.
Patrick Borlik allowed three runs on three hits in 5 2/3 innings for the Broncos.
Pat Haynes pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit for Western Michigan.
Western Michigan scored all seven of its runs in the first inning off Maine starter Scott Heath, who lasted just a 1/3 inning. Patrick Duncan and Theo Piccirilli each had two hits and two RBIs for the Broncos. Kurt Hoekstra and Andrew Sohn each had three hits.
Heath stayed in the game for Maine as the designated hitter and had two hits for the Black Bears.
Skiing
NCAA championships: Colby College's Marc Massie had the 11th-best second run on his way to a 22nd-place finish in the giant slalom at Middlebury College's Snow Bowl.
Craig Marshall finished 31 for Colby, while Jim Ryan was 32nd. Cassady Roberts placed 32nd for the Colby women.
Also Wednesday: Cony High School graduate Dillon Shaw and Messalonskee graduate Chris DelGiudice each had an assist in the Husson University men's lacrosse team's 8-6 loss to Anna Maria in Bangor.
