STAFF REPORT
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Mike Connolly hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 12th inning as the University of Maine baseball team beat West Virginia 2-1 Saturday.
Scott Heath hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game for Maine (7-10). Alex Calbick started Maine's game-winning rally with a single, then moved to second on a sacrifice by Brian Doran. Eric White single to center, moving Calbick to third and Connolly ended the game.
A.J. Bazdanes pitched nine innings for Maine and allowed one run on eight hits, while striking out six. John Means pitched eight innings for West Virginia.
Track and field
NCAA Division III championships: University of Southern Maine sophomore Kevin Desmond, a Monmouth Academy graduate, finished eighth in the 800-meter finals, in Naperville, Ill.
Desmond finished in a time of 2:01.97. He qualified for the finals Friday by running a 1:53.04 in the prelims.
Jake Waterman of Wasbash won the race in 1:50.30.
The Colby women's 1,600-meter relay team earned All-American honors after finishing fourth. Emily Doyle, Frances Onyilagha, Emily Tolman and Brittney Bell comprised the team, which finished in 3:51.58. The foursome broke their own school record. niversity of Wisconsin at La Crosse won the relay in 3:48.32.
Men's lacrosse
Colby 11, Amherst 10, OT: Ian Deveau scored with 1:05 left in the first overtime as the Mules beat the Lord Jeffs in the New England Small College Athletic Conference opener for both teams in Waterville.
Chip Grossman scored to tie the game in regulation for Colby, then set up Deveau for the game-winning shot in overtime.
John Jennings had five goals for the Mules and is now over 100 points for his career (102). Greg McKillop added a goal and three assists, while John Alex Rutan had his first goal.
Dylan Park had two goals and two assists for Amherst.
Women's lacrosse
Colby 10, Amherst 7: Lindsey McKenna scored three goals as the Mules beat the Lord Jeffs in the NESCAC opener for both teams, in Amherst, Mass.
Dana Swaffield and Abby Hooper each added two goals for Colby, while Sara Miller had a goal and an assist.
Priscilla Tyler had four goals for Amherst.
UM-Farmington 19, Wheelock College 12: Messalonskee graduate Mar Balboni had six goals and an assist in her debut as the Beavers won at Colby College’s Bill Alfond Field.
Fellow Messalonskee graduate Maddi Kadnar added five goals an an assist for UMF, while Ayla Allen had four goals and Lyndsey Grundy three goals an an assist.
