HIGH SCHOOL SKIING CHAMPIONSHIPS: Mt. Blue has strong day at states

Morning Sentinel Staff

RUMFORD -- The Mt. Blue girls and boys Nordic ski teams got off to a fast start at the Class A state championships Monday afternoon at Black Mountain.

The Mt. Blue boys placed four skiers in the top 25 of the classical race to finish tied with Leavitt for second place. Favored Falmouth is first.

"I think we had some solid performances from everybdy," Mt. Blue Nordic ski coach David Nordstrom said. "Everybody had at least a solid race. We didn't have one of those things where absolutely everything came together."

Mt. Blue senior Zach Veayo finished sixth in 14 minutes, 50.6 seconds.

"Veayo skied very fast," Nordstrom said. "This is going to be interesting with Leavitt. I don't think anyone can catch Falmouth but we knew we'd be tight with Leavitt."

Isaac Doiron finished 13th in 15:42.7. Sully Jackson was 21st (16:51.5) while Silas Rogers followed at 22nd in 16:53.8.

Fryeburg Academy's Silas Eastman won the boys race in 13:22.2.

Mt. Blue junior Sarah Wade finished second in 17:2.1. Emily Bland of Windham won the race in 16:30.9. The Mt. Blue girls are fourth after the first day.

Competition continues today with the giant slalom and freestyle races. The slalom races are scheduled for Wednesday.

Class C also began its competition Monday at the Heritage Nordic Center in Presque Isle with the boys and girls classical races.

Dylan Thombs of Monmouth finished fifth overall in 16:28.2. Winthrop's Aaron St. Pierre was 18th in 18:49.6.

Lance McKenney of Fort Kent won the race in 15:48.2.

On the girls side, Katahdin swept the top two spots, with Lydia Streinz winning it in 18:55.6. Hannah Streinz finished second in 19:19.3.

Rebekah Bryant of Monmouth was 15th in 22:09.3. Winthrop's Rachel Ingram was 22nd in 23:07.4.
