WATERVILLE — Both Post 51 and The Red Barn aren’t sure exactly what they have yet. That still won’t stop people from speculating, and in fact, they might be the two best teams in American Legion Baseball Zone 2.

Post 51 picked up three players from the demise of the Waterville and South China Subway teams, and one of those three, Dylan Hapworth, led the offense on Tuesday evening. Isiah Fleming and Devin Warren did their part on the mound, and Post 51 held off The Red Barn for a 5-3 victory at Colby College.

“Some of these kids we don’t know,” said Post 51 coach Paul Jacobs, whose team was playing its season opener after having to postpone three games because Messalonskee played in the Class A title game. “We haven’t even got together yet. We just know them by name. They’re going to learn about us and we’re going to learn about them a little bit.”

Hapworth beat out an infield single in the first inning and scored on three wild pitches, then drove a two-run double off the fence in right field in the fifth. Jake Dexter added two singles for Post 51, which has players from Messalonskee, Lawrence, Waterville and Winslow high schools.

Fleming, who pitched for Thomas College this spring, loaded the bases in the top of the first inning, but kept The Red Barn off the board by striking out the side. He gave up only one run in four innings and that came in the second inning when John Suga’s groundout scored Mitchell Caron.

“Isiah threw very well,” Jacobs said. “He didn’t want to come out, but we’ve got a lot of games coming up, so he can start out at four (innings). He ain’t thrown in a month.”

The Red Barn, which represents Augusta Post 205, used four different pitchers on Tuesday, and held Post 51 to six hits. Second baseman Zack Lachance and shortstop Chandler Shostak combined to turn two double plays. The Red Barn (2-1) ended up leaving the bases loaded in the first and the sixth, which probably decided the game.

“We’ve really only been together about a week now,” The Red Barn coach Don Plourde said, “but we saw some good things. We’ve got to just continue to work and get better, but overall, I was pleased.”

Post 51 scored three runs in the bottom of the first on a wild pitch, a bloop single by Trevor Getting and a passed ball. Thomas Foster pitched four solid innings of relief for The Red Barn, allowing only the two runs on Hapworth’s two-out double.

The Red Barn scored two runs in the fifth inning with the help of a triple to center field by Suga, but Warren set the visitors down 1-2-3 in the seventh to end the game.
