WATERVILLE — This time around, the Waterville boys soccer team made the most of its opportunities against Erskine.
John Terhune scored a goal and an assist to lift No. 8 Waterville past No. 9 Erskine 4-0 in an Eastern A preliminary round rematch Friday before about 200 spectators at Webber Field.

The rivals settled for a 1-1 draw in the regular season, but it was all Waterville this time.
“We’ve had some games where we didn’t finish our opportunities,” Waterville coach Kerry Serdjenian said. “We just kept coming at them (Friday). Our backs played really solid. Some days the ball just doesn’t go in. It did (Friday).”
Waterville will play at top-seeded Mt. Ararat (12-1-1) in a quarterfinal game at 5 p.m., Wednesday.
Sophomore striker Danilo Guthro, Tommy Samson and Kaleb Kane also scored for the Purple Panthers (8-4-3), who out-shot the Eagles (7-4-4) 23-3.
Goalie Zach Disch needed to make just three saves to earn the shutout.
“We wanted to come out strong,” Serdjenian said. “We wanted to come out and get that first goal on the scoreboard and just keep going.”
The Panthers did just that.
Terhune scored midway through the first half when he beat Erskine goalie Jared Gartley off a throw-in.
“The flick throw got blocked and the ball got to my foot,” Terhune said. “I had an opening and I just shot it through the keeper’s hands. It was important to get that first goal, that’s what we wanted to do.”
It stayed 1-0 until Waterville scored two goals in a 10-minute span in the second half. Guthro made it 2-0 when he scored 7:40 into the second half.
“I took a defender one on one and put it in the left corner,” Guthro said.
Samson extended the lead when he scored with 10 minutes later.
“We kept it within reach,” Erskine coach Phil Hubbard said. “It was just 1-0 at halftime but that second one deflated you a little bit. But the kids fought right down to the end.”
Gartley finished with 19 saves for the Eagles.
“(Waterville) is just very technically sound,” Hubbard said. “Hats off to them.”
Kane and Michael Oliveira also had assists for the Panthers.
“We knew if we could get up on them early we could control the game,” Terhune said. “Things would start flowing. We just kept the pressure on and never let up. It’s what we wanted to do.”
