Morning Sentinel Staff

PORTLAND -- Ed Pickett of Augusta, former Cony High School baseball coach Jeff Trundy and Carroll Plourde of Waterville are part of a nine-person class that will be inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame at its annual induction ceremony on July 28.

Pickett, a Cony High School graduate, was a catcher at the University of Maine and one of the few Mainers to play in the Little League and College World Series.

Plourde played professionally for the Boston Braves as well as several semi-pro teams in central Maine, and was instrumental in organizing Little League, Babe Ruth and Legion teams in Waterville.

Trundy played town team ball for West Minot and Turner before starring at the University of New Hampshire. He coached at Cony, the Gunnery School in Connecticut and Falmouth in the Cape Cod League.

Those three will be joined in the class by: Danny Alvino of Livermore Falls, who played several seasons in the Brooklyn Dodgers organization; Kevin Bernier of Lincoln, who was a key member of the University of Maine teams that made three straight trips to the College World Series from 1981-983; Greg Coppeta of Westbrook, who was a two-time all-American selection while pitching for the University of Southern Maine in 1989-90 and later played in the Detroit Tigers organization; Dennis Martel, a 1977 Marshwood graduate who has been the head coach at Illinois Wesleyan for 26 season; Will Sanborn of Standish who, as the head baseball coach at St. Joseph's College has led the Monks to seven conference titles and made six NCAA Division III regional tournament appearanaces; and Tom Watson of Portland, a two-time all-TelegramLeague selection in 1969-70 as a dominant pitcher/outfielder at Deering High School.
