ORONO -- After a season in which he was named the Penobscot Valley Conference pitcher and player of the year, Foxcroft Academy's Ryan Rebar had one more award to claim.

On Friday, Rebar was named the winner of the Dr. John Winkin Award, presented annually to the top high school baseball player in Maine. Rebar accepted the award prior to the Larry Mahaney Senior Baseball Classic, featuring the top senior players from Eastern Maine against their counterparts from the West.

"Wow. It's such an honor to win that award for Mr. Winkin. It's such a blessing," Rebar said. "I think every finalist thinks they have a shot at winning it. To be nominated for the award is something special in itself. To win it is something different, and I'm just blessed. It's something I'll remember for the rest of my life."

Rebar went 6-1 on the mound for the Ponies this season, with an ERA of 1.02 in 41 innings pitched. It was at the plate Rebar felt he improved the most over his four-year career.

"My younger years, I kind of struggled at the plate. I've gotten better in that regard," said Rebar, who it .339 with 12 stolen bases.

Rebar help the Ponies win the Eastern Class B baseball title in 2012 and was a member of Foxcroft's Class C state championship football team last fall. Rebar will play football and baseball at Husson University.

"I'm looking to take what I learned at the high school level and work on more in college," Rebar said.

The West won the game, 7-3. The West took control of the game with four runs in the top of the third inning. After the West took a 1-0 lead on an error, South Portland's Nick Whitten drove in a run with a single. Alex McLean of Marshwood hit a two-run single to push the West lead to 4-0.

McLean drove in three runs for the West, while Whitten drove in a pair.

Down 6-0, the East scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Hampden's Cooper Antone scored on a passed ball, and Zach Lachance of Cony scored on a wild pitch.

Each team used wooden bats, donated and made by Winslow High School baseball coach Jesse LaCasse.
