For some Nordic skiers, the first day of the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference and Mountain Valley Conference championships was the first time on snow in a long time.

“(Wednesday) was the first time we’ve skied in two weeks,” Winthrop High School Nordic coach Jay Lindsey said.

Despite the time off the trails, the Winthrop girls Nordic team put in one of the best efforts on Day 1 of the championships, which are scheduled to continue Saturday. The Ramblers placed three skiers in the top 10 of Wednesday’s Nordic freestyle MVC race.

Nordic and Alpine events were held at Black Mountain in Rumford.

Winthop’s Rachel Ingram was fifth (20:56.1), while Jada Choate took eighth (21:11.3) and Mary Claire Blanchard ninth (21:34.4) for the Ramblers in the Nordic race.

“They did the best they could with the snow conditions,” Lindey said. “The places where the kids snowplowed, it got pretty icy. It was a good, challenging course.”
