WATERVILLE — Ceara DiBiase scored the game-winning goal with 2 minutes, 24 seconds to play as Thomas College defeated New England College 12-11 in North Atlantic Conference women’s lacrosse action Sunday afternoon.

With the victory, Thomas (10-4, 5-1) secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. Thomas will play a semifinal game Saturday in Castleton, Vt., against the winner of Wednesday’s game between Husson and Colby-Sawyer.

DiBiase and Messalonskee High School graduate Miranda Tinsman each scored three goals for the Terriers. Jillian Lambert and Brittany Premo added two goals apiece.

Thomas led 11-9 when Tinsman scored with 3:46 to go in the game, but NEC (4-13, 2-4) tied it with goals by Alexa Tardif and Meredith Merce.

UMF 11, Green Mountain 7: Ayla Allen led the way with three goals and four assists as the Beavers earned the NAC win in Farmington.

Molly Carbin added three goals for UMF (5-7, 3-3), and Messalonskee grad Maddi Kadnar chipped in with two goals and two assists. The Beavers will host New England College on Wednesday in the NAC tournament, with the winner playing at No. 1 Castleton on Saturday.

Green Mountain finishes 2-10 overall and 0-6 in the conference.

Baseball

Castleton 5-1, Thomas 3-0: The Terriers allowed only six runs in the doubleheader but couldn’t get enough offense themselves as the Spartans swept the NAC doubleheader in Castleton, Vt.

Castleton (23-7, 20-2) won the opener by getting six of its nine hits in the second inning. The Spartans scored four times in the inning and held on for a 5-3 win. Anree Benitez had three hits for Thomas and Derek Kane singled twice.

Messalonskee grad Eric Sucy took the tough loss in Game 2. Sucy allowed only five hits and an unearned run in six innings of work. Mat Pause scored Castleton’s run in the fifth on an RBI groundout after advancing to third on a throwing error.

Thomas (12-19, 11-7) threatened several times against Castelton pitcher Patrick Riley. The Terriers left two men on in both the sixth and seventh innings.

UMF 10-6, New England College 2-10: Seven different players drove in a run for the Beavers as they took the first game on their way to a split in Farmington.

Joe Sullivan threw a five-hit complete game for UMF (8-16, 7-13). Lawrence grad Matt Woodbury, Erskine grad Tom Grady, Ben Keene and Zach Keene each had two hits.

Ben Keene added three hits and Gray had a pair of hits in the night cap. The Pilgrims (4-19, 3-15) had 18 hits in the win, including three apiece by Christopher Smith, Eric Johnson and Matthew Krum.

Stony Brook 1, Maine 0: Mike Connolly pitched nine shutout innings and allowed four hits, but ended up with a no-decision in Stony Brook’s America East victory in Orono.

The loss ended a nine-game winning streak for the Black Bears (24-15, 13-4). Maine is 14-3 in its last 17 games and all three losses were by one run. The last time the Bears lost a game by more than one run was on March 17.

Stony Brook (14-26, 7-11) scored its run in the 10th when Jack Parenty (3 for 5) singled home Joshua Mason. Stony Brook starter Daniel Zamora pitched eight innings, allowing three hits and striking out nine.

Softball

Thomas 9-8, UMPI 1-0: The Terriers swept the doubleheader in Waterville, winning each game in five innings by the mercy rule.

In Game 1, Faith Robinson pitched a three-hitter for the win. Messalonskee grad Lauren Hachey had two doubles and two RBIs and McKayla Gastia had two hits and drove in three runs.

Robinson and Gastia combined on a one-hit shutout in the second game. Gastia was 2 for 2, making her 4 for 4 for the day. Messalonskee grad Alyssa Eugley went 3 for 3 with two doubles and scored a pair of runs.

Stony Brook 4-3, Maine 2-2: Jean Stevens hit her league-leading 12th home run of the year for the Black Bears, but the Seawolves won both America East games in Orono.

Shayla Giosia drove in two runs and Allison Cukrov tossed a four-hitter with seven strikeouts as Stony Brook (25-19, 8-5) took Game 1.

The nightcap went 15 innings. Maine’s Alexis Bogdanovich threw 9 2/3 innings of relief, giving up only one run, but was still hung with the loss. Stony Brook’s Jane Sallen went 11 2/3 innings of relief, allowing only three hits and an unearned run. Game 2 took three hours and 45 minutes.

Crew

Men: The Colby varsity 8 crew boat took second place behind Bates at the President’s Cup on Androscoggin River. Colby placed third in the second varsity 8, second in the varsity 4 and third in the novice 4.

Women: The Colby varsity 8 had an equipment malfunction and placed third at the President’s Cup. Colby was third in the varsity 4, second in the novice 8 and third in the novice 4.
