BOSTON — Miranda Tinsman scored four goals, including the clincher with six seconds to play, as Thomas held off Wentworth 16-14 in college women’s lacrosse action Sunday afternoon.

Tinsman, a Messalonskee High School graduate, also had two assists. Gardiner grad Jenn Day added four goals, while Erin Nelligan pitched in with two goals and two assists for the Terriers (4-3). Brittany Fox made 12 saves for the win in goal.

Jessica Houghton and Julie Azzinaro each finished with four goals for Wentworth (1-2). Thomas scored the final four goals of the first half, including two by Ceara DiBiase, to lead 10-7 at the break. Thomas led 15-12 in the second half before Azzinaro put in two quick goals to get Wentworth within 15-14 with 5:15 left.

Men’s lacrosse

Wentworth 20, Thomas 0: Steve Glover had five goals and Ryan Coakley added three goals and four assists as the Leopards blanked the Terriers in Boston.

Wentworth is now 5-0. Jesse Morkeski made 22 saves and Waterville grad Dakota Gendreau stopped four shots for Thomas (1-3).

Baseball

Colby 12-8 Elmhurst 3-3: Scott Goldberg pitched a complete game and struck out 10 in the nightcap as the Mules opened their season by taking both ends of a doubleheader in Auburndale, Fla.

Greg Ladd pitched a strong six innings in Game 1. Jason Buco (three stolen bases) and Dan Csaplar each had two hits for the Mules.

Cony grad Luke Duncklee had two hits in the second game for Colby. Elmhurst is 5-3.

Maine 6-7 Harftord 7-2: The Black Bears lost the opener in nine innings before taking the nightcap of the America East doubleheader in West Hartford, Conn.

In Game 1, Maine rallied from a 6-0 deficit to tie the score in the top of the seventh, only to have freshman Billy Walker deliver a pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Hawks (4-15, 3-3) the win.

Maine (13-13, 4-2) struck back in Game 2 as starter Mike Connolly threw five shutout innings for his third victory. Colin Gay went 2 for 2 with a pair of walks and scored four runs for the Black Bears. Alex Calbick also had a perfect day with a single and three walks.

Softball

Maine 7, UMBC 6: Hannah Hill broke a 5-5 tie with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh and the Black Bears pulled out the victory in Baltimore.

Hill had two hits and drove in three runs for Maine (5-26). Emj Fogel, Hilary Kane, and Jessica Burk also had two hits for the Bears.

UMBC (7-21) scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run on third when the game ended.

Also Sunday: Messalonskee grad Dylan Foster and Waterville grad Josh Gaudette each drove in a run as the Husson baseball team split a doubleheader with Bates, losing, 10-2 and winning, 5-3.
