FARMINGTON — The third-seeded University of Maine at Farmington men’s basketball team advanced to the North Atlantic Conference semifinals with an 85-72 win over No. 6 New England College in the quarterfinals Tuesday.

The Beavers improve to 16-10 and will play the winner of No. 2 Colby-Sawyer vs. No. 7 Johnson State College.

The 16th win is the most by a UMF men’s basketball team since 1999-2000, when the Beavers finished 21-5.

New England College ends the season 7-19.

Maranacook Community School graduate Kevin Leary led UMF with 17 points. Pet Sumner added 15, while Maranacook graduate Ben Johnson had 14 points and nine rebounds.

Yusuf Iman added 11 points off the bench for the Beavers.

Abdi Mohamed had 23 points, including five 3-pointers for NEC.

Women’s basketball

No. 1 Castleton 74, No. 8 Thomas 41: Vanessa Powers scored 21 points, including the 1,000th of her career, as the Spartans beat the Terriers in a NAC quarterfinal game in Castleton, Vt.

Castleton improves to 20-5 and advances to the conference semifinals for the 10th straight season. Thomas ends the season 6-19.

Christine Jacques added 15 points for Castleton and Alyssa Leonard added 13.

Lindsay Fry led the Terriers with eight points, while Elizabeth Goodall and Jasmine Bishop each had six points.

No. 3 Husson 70, No. 6 UM-Farmington 65: Emma Morrison scored 15 points, but the Beavers were knocked out of the NAC tournament in the quarterfinals by the Eagles in Farmington.

Kenni Norton added 13 points, while Paige Saunders had 12 for UMF, which ends the season at 10-15.

Stephanie Comstock and Amanda Gifford each had 14 points for Husson, which improves to 16-10 and advances to play No. 2 Colby-Sawyer in the conference semifinals on Friday.
