WINSLOW — The location was new, Winslow High School’s refurbished Donald Matheson track, but the result of the Community Cup track and field meet was the same. For the ninth consecutive year, the Waterville girls and boys each won the title.

“We work really hard to accomplish what we do,” said Waterville’s Kellie Bolduc, who won the 100-meter hurdles, 300 hurdles, and triple jump for the Purple Panthers. “We had to step up the competition.”

The Waterville girls won with 128 points. Lawrence was second with 86 points, and Messalonskee took third with 68, edging Winslow by one point.

The Waterville boys scored 165 points to win handily. Messalonskee was second with 98.5 points, squeaking past Lawrence (97.5).

“We always hope to continue the streak. There’s quite a bit of competition,” said Waterville’s Chris Cote, who won the 3,200.

The closest race of the day was the girls 200, where Messalonskee’s Amanda Knight won by the slimmest of margins. Knight leaned over the finish line just ahead of Waterville’s Georgia Bolduc, winning with a time of 26.44 to Bolduc’s 26.45.

“I knew my first two races (the 100 and 400) weren’t my best. I knew I had to pick it up to win the 200,” Knight said.

A good start was the key, Knight said.

“I started by relaxing, getting my mind to it in the blocks,” Knight said. “I knew I had to stick with Georgia. I wasn’t sure I’d get here, but I got her on the lean.”

Of her three individual wins, Kellie Bolduc felt her best effort was in the 300 hurdles, where she set a personal record with 47.63 seconds.

Winslow’s Alliyah Veilleux was the winner in the girls 100, where she set a meet record of 12.77 seconds, shot put (35-4.25) and discus (104-00). Messalonskee’s Taylor Lenentine set a meet record in the girls pole vault by clearing 10 feet.

Bethanie Brown picked up a pair of wins for Waterville. In the 800, Brown won with a time of 2:16.17, edging Lawrence’s Erzsie Nagy (2:17.89). Brown dominated the 3,200, lapping the entire field and winning in 10:19.88.

Messalonskee’s Logan Moses won a close boys 1,600, out-kicking Cote over the final 100 meters to win in 4:36.61 to Cote’s 4:37.78. The two were neck and neck over the final two laps, but with 300 meters to go, it looked like Cote would pull away.

“I was a little discouraged when (Cote) passed me,” Moses said. “I knew I was gaining with 100 to go, so I gave it all I had.”

Added Cote: “I felt pretty good in the mile. Even though I won the two mile, I felt I ran better in the mile. It was a PR. It felt pretty fast.”

Waterville’s Jordhan Levine took wins in the 110 hurdles (16.21), 300 hurdles (42.32) and triple jump (42-02). Devin Burgess earned wins for the Panthers in the pole vault (14-08) and long jump (20-07) while Nick Danner won the discus (137-1) and javelin (183-6) for Waterville.
